Sr. Helene’s Wichita Adventures

 Sister Miriam Therese Rau, ASC

by Sr. Miriam Rau, ASC

On the morning of June 25, Sr. Helene boarded a plane in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with Wichita, Kansas, as a final destination. Helene was on her way to perform a corporal work of mercy, visiting a sick friend who was in the hospital. Little did she know the adventures that awaited her before she arrived.

Rain and heavy winds swept through Wichita, causing Helene’s plane to be diverted to Omaha, Nebraska. The plane finally landed in the early morning hours of June 26, on the tarmac in Wichita. She was picked up by two courageous Adorers.

That same day, and for many days after, Helene visited Sr. Barbara Croom in the hospital. She brought joy, and some surprises to Barb. On July 4, Helene wore huge white plastic glasses decorated with trimmings of red, white, and blue, in honor of America’s 250th birthday. Of course, the glasses were given to Barb, so that she could join in the celebration by wearing these “special” glasses.

Once Barb was well enough to come home to Caritas, Helene visited her quite often. We all believe that Barb’s recovery was due in part to Helene’s faithful visit.

In addition to visiting Barb, Helene joined our community in prayer, meals, and other fun activities. On July 4, Dan, our maintenance supervisor, came with his children, and a truckload full of fireworks. We all celebrated that evening, being entertained by shooting stars, and many other fireworks. Thank you, Dan!

Another afternoon, Happi, a therapy dog, came to visit the sisters in Caritas. Of course, Helene was there to welcome and pet Happi. One morning Helene went along to Friends of Felines, with Miriam, to socialize and play with cats. Animals love Helene, and she loves them back.

One Sunday, Helene, attended Mass at Holy Savior Parish with Sr. Josie. This was the parish where Barbara Croom ministered as pastoral associate for many years. It is mainly a Black parish with a vibrant choir and lively liturgies.

It would be unheard of to visit Wichita without visiting Braum’s, our famous ice cream chain.  Needless to say, Helene enjoyed her visit there.

Thank you, Helene, for your stay with us. As you told us, “It has been many years since I have been here.” Your smile, stories, and funny jokes were appreciated by all of us. Thank you, Helene, for having the courage, tenacity, and love to visit Barb, and us. Come back again!
