by Sr. Janet McCann, ASC
The Adorers of the United States Region invited Mark Clatterbuck to give a presentation on his recently published book, Sacred Resistance, Eco-Activism and the Rise of New Spiritual Communities. Mark is currently professor of Religion and co-director of Native American and Indigenous Studies at Montclair University in Montclair, New Jersey.
Mark, his wife Malinda, and their two children, Ashton and Hannah, and a whole community of local grassroots activists (Lancaster Against Pipeline), partnered with the Adorers in 2017, and led multiple non-violent actions of resistance to the fracked gas pipeline that was forcibly installed on the Adorers’ farmland, in Columbia, Pennsylvania.
In Sacred Resistance, Mark highlights the stories of five spiritual communities engaged in environmental activism: the Anishinaabe, Adorers of the Blood of Christ, Native Hawaiians, Black Baptists with Hindu Monastics, and Quakers.
In Mark’s presentations in Belleville, Illinois, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and Wichita, Kansas, he gave extra time and attention to Chapter 2. You can easily guess that that was the chapter in which the ASCs were highlighted.
We are grateful to Mark for his willingness to share his book with us and for giving us a glimpse into how he accesses his activist/scholar/author/teacher roles in engaging and inspiring ways. The highlight of Mark’s time with us, however, was the opportunity for reconnection between Mark and the Adorers. That’s one for the books!
