On March 7, seven of us ASCs joined several hundred other people in an ecumenical prayer vigil in solidarity with ICE detainees. The event was held outside a detention center in Ste. Genevieve, MO. The opening remarks came from the volunteer group, “Abide in Love,” who coordinate communication and assistance between detainees and their families. Of the 1,145 individuals who have been detained there by ICE, 154 are still being held in this facility, which is next to the Ste. Genevieve County jail.
The biggest sponsor for this solemn, reverent event was the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and the Adorers of the Blood of Christ US Region was among the 25 other sponsors. It brought together people of different color, race, creed, gender, age, and religion. The speakers, prayer, and music were all meant to make us more aware of the plight of our migrant brothers and sisters and assure them that they are not alone, even though they are isolated from their loved ones.
Afterwards our fellowship continued as we went to the VFW Hall for a Mexican lunch and live Mariachi music. We seven ASCs were mindful of our ASC stance for migrant justice and carried you all in our hearts with our presence there. We pledge that we will not be captives of power, fear or money because the backbone of our faith is to stand with the vulnerable.
