Sister Kate Reid, ASC, celebrated 60 years as a vowed member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC) on July 1, 2025, at Benedictine Living Community at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows near Belleville, IL. Sister Kate made her first vows on July 1, 1965, and final vows on June 29, 1969, at Ruma. She marked the anniversary with the Eucharist, followed by a reception. She was joined in the celebration by the ASC community.
Sister Kate was born in St. Louis, MO, to Francis and Mary Reid. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from St. Louis University in 1968. She earned a certificate in Spirituality from the School for Active Spirituality for Global Communication in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1977, and a master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA, in 1987.
Sister Kate began her ministry as a teacher at SS. Peter and Paul in Waterloo, IL. She taught at St. Pius X High School in Festus, MO, and at St. Teresa Academy and Assumption High School, both in East St. Louis, IL. She served as Pastoral Associate at St. Joseph Parish in E. St. Louis and as Campus Minister at the Newman Center of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. Her community service included two terms as a councilor on the leadership team, one for the former Ruma Province, another for the entire U.S. Region, following Convergence of the three provinces in 2000. She also held the position of Justice and Peace Coordinator for the U.S. Region for several years.
Her creativity has been a valuable asset, inviting her to serve on numerous committees and boards, including those providing Sanctuary for refugees, planning for ASC landmark events, articulating the community’s Land Ethic, and the annual policy-making Assembly of the U.S. Region.
Sister Kate’s current ministry is with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. She serves as a Legal Advocate on the staff of the Catholic Immigration Law Program, a ministry of the St. Louis Archdiocese. She was recently appointed to the Racial Justice and Equity Committee for the Diocese of Belleville.
Hi, Kate,
I’m not computer savvy, but I hope you receive this. I read the MESSENGER this morning and loved the article about your call to be a religious sister through your ministry the past 60 years. I laughed, though. I would have thought you would have mentioned ME as being influencial in your decision to say “YES.” I entered a couple of years before you (this is to make you laugh). Congratulations!!!!!
Jean keeps me up to date on you and Larry. I am grateful for the changes which allow you to make him your top priority and keep him independent. Please pray for me and Bill. We met 50 years ago, have been married 48 years in October, and are living through a recent diagnosis of esophageal cancer for Bill. It is inoperable, and not treatable by chemo or radiation. We know our time together is in God’s hands, and appreciate all the prayers we can get that we let God lead, knowing He is before me and behind me and within me and throughout me.
I always thought you were too attractive to stay a “nun”. Shows what I know.
