Response to Religious Life Dying Out in America

Adorers of the Blood of Christ

by Sr. Rose Anthony Mathews, ASC

This is my response/reaction to Sr. Marcia Kruse’s very thought-provoking question last month.

In the 70 years I have been an Adorer, there have been an infinite number of changes in this country, in the Church, in our ASC Community but with discerning hearts we, along with other vowed men and women, have adapted to the needs of the time.

We live in a country saturated with consumerism, sexism, ‘what’s in it for me philosophy,’ an undying search for power, possessions, prestige. To live poverty, chastity, and obedience is a challenge but possible. Men and women through the ages have nurtured and cherished the charisms of their founding mother/father.

Adaptations have been made, and history can show that God is/was the center/the heartbeat of their lives.
America desperately needs a few folks to proudly, boldly, simply witness in word and action that God is their ALL. I believe the call will always be there and there will always be a few courageous, committed folks to continue passing on the torch of Maria de Mattias’ charism, somewhere, somehow! Amen! So may it be!
