Sister Mary Alan Wurth, ASC, celebrated 65 years as a vowed member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ at Benedictine Living Community at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows on Saturday, July 1, 2023. She made her first profession on July 1, 1958 and her final vows on July 1, 1963. Joined by the ASC community, she celebrated her anniversary with the Eucharist and a reception.
Sister Alan was born in Lincoln, IL, to Leo and Ethel (Carpenter) Wurth. She earned her bachelor’s in 1961 and her master’s in 1963, both in Biology and both from St. Louis University. She received her doctorate in Physiology from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1969.
Her ministry in the field of science began with teaching biology at the Ruma Center, which was, at that time, an extension of the St. Louis University campus. Following four years of medical research at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, she served for twenty-eight years as imaging technologist at St Vincent (now Taylorville) Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. She was also co-administrator of Maria’s Vineyard, a community which attended to unmet needs in Cairo, IL.
Sister Alan’s community service included two terms as Provincial Councilor for the former Ruma Province, being the administrator of De Mattias Hall, the ASC House of Studies on the campus of St. Louis University, serving as Chairperson of the ASC Health System and serving as archivist of the Ruma area.
Sister Mary Alan recently moved to Benedictine Living Community where she is Living Mission in Later Life. She continues to research and promote care for the environment
