Sister Joan (Ann Joseph) Weiler, ASC, celebrated 60 years as a vowed member of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ at Benedictine Living Community at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows on Saturday, July 1, 2023. She made her first profession on July 1, 1963, and her final vows on June 30, 1968. Joined by the ASC community, she marked her anniversary with the Eucharist and a reception.
Sister Joan was born in Olney, IL to Sylvester and Coletta (Kocher) Weiler. She earned her bachelor’s degree in American Studies at St. Louis University, St. Louis, in 1968, and her master’s in religious education from St. Thomas University in Houston, TX, in 1982. She held a certificate in Hispanic Ministry from the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, TX; she was also certified as an elementary teacher for the states of Illinois and Missouri.
Her teaching ministry ranged from Illinois and Missouri to Puerto Rico. She taught primary grades at St. Clare in O’Fallon, St. Cecilia in Bartelso, Immaculate Conception in Centreville, St. Albert the Great in Fairview Heights, St. Augustine in Belleville, St. Joseph in Prairie du Rocher and Holy Family in Cahokia, all in Illinois. Before going to Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, she taught at Our Lady in Festus, MO. Her ministry at Colegio Lourdes School in Rio Piedras also included music. For almost all of her teaching years, she was an organist in the parish.
Following a semester of intense study of Spanish, Sister Joan began a 19-year ministry in San Antonio, TX, serving at St. Martin de Porres, St. Benedict, Holy Name and St. Thomas More parishes. In addition to being a music minister, she served as a Director of Religious Education, Coordinator of the Adult Catechumenate, a Pastoral Associate and, for ten years, as a Deanery Consultant in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
While Pastoral Care had always been part of her role as a parish minister, it became her primary ministry at Taylorville (formerly St. Vincent) Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL for ten years. Occasionally she also did Pastoral Care at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL. She accepted the opportunity to be an organist where needed.
Sister Joan joined the Neighborhood Community in Waterloo, IL, in 2018. She is the organist at St. Augustine in Hecker, IL, a nearby town. She also serves part-time at the parish in Waterloo, SS. Peter and Paul.
