Kids, teachers, single moms, more kids, more teachers… lots more…. this was the backdrop of my two weeks in Guatemala this May. Always a joy to reconnect with those who mean so much to me. I continue to be a part of the ongoing growth of the María De Mattias Education Institute, especially by providing in-service opportunities for the teachers and helping with the evaluation of the Mission Statement and the ways in which it is being lived.
It’s a bonus to schedule these classes around my birthday! Mostly, I see it as a chance for celebrating our connections and the amazing creativity of the teachers and students. I think there are still a goodly number of students who are sure that I am the sister of Maria De Mattias. I think that’s progress because for a long while the kids asked me if I was María De Mattias. I kind of like that.
I was grateful to attend the women’s literacy/craft classes. The number of women who have participated in these classes, helped by our own Foundation, is impressive and definitely sowing the seeds of a new mindset in regard to the capabilities and contributions of women. I love that the ASCs are recognized as partners to their efforts.
I include photos of kids, teachers, the women, birthday celebrations! And I thank God and our community for the privilege of staying connected.
