Collecting Children’s Christmas Books

Sitting down with a cup of hot tea and enjoying some of my children’s Christmas books is one of my favorite things to do during the Christmas Season. It always brings me “tidings of comfort and joy.”

Some collect angels or bells or nativity sets. I collect Christmas books.

It started when I was a director of religious education and responsible for the Parish School of Religion Christmas program.

What began for a practical reason soon became a deeper and broader pursuit of great children’s books.

A Little Good Friday on Christmas Eve

The scene at midnight Mass at St. Vincent de Paul was exquisite: The venerable, old church in St. Louis, my parish, was dressed up in red poinsettias, white lights, candles, and crib, and the choir was enchanting and soulful. In the pews near the back, however, scenes from Good Friday unfolded.

An intoxicated, incoherent and injured woman, in need of a shower and clean clothes, had encountered four Catholic Sisters in the church parking lot as they arrived at the church for caroling. She was screaming and pleading, ‘Help me!
