Sister Elizabeth began volunteering at the College Church in 2004 after a 40-year career teaching and building the American Studies Department at Saint Louis University. Her doctorate is in America’s social and intellectual history.
She works with clients, many of them homeless, who come to the College Church for assistance. Among other things, she helps them with the very basic need of acquiring an identification card, which is necessary to enter a homeless shelter.
She was honored on Oct. 17 at the parish’s Xavier Days celebration. The award is named for Henry Bronsgeest, the Dutch Jesuit pastor of College Church from 1888 to 1914, who oversaw fundraising and construction of the church at the edge of Saint Louis University’s campus.
