Janis’s Journey

A Journey of Faith

By Sister Janis Yaekel, ASC

The season of Advent is upon us, time to reflect on the powerful way that the Lord has touched our lives. It is a time of waiting for the rebirth of Jesus in our lives.

This past year, I’ve had to exercise strong faith. While I have been dealing with pancreatic cancer for five years, my discomfort has increased quite a bit over the last few months. I have experienced more issues and suspect that there will be more to come.

How do I face the issues ahead?

It has been some time since my last blog, but I haven’t been feeling very well lately. I am dealing with stomach issues and nausea that is probably caused by the fact that my liver is not working as it should.

My blood tests revealed that my platelet count was still rather low,

As I look out the window this morning, I am delighted to see a bluebird jumping into the nesting box. It is always a pleasure to see them fly by and flash that brilliant blue.

Close Call, But Spring Prevails

By Sister Janis Yaekel, ASC

It has been a while since I wrote my last blog but I have been dealing with new medical issues that have sidelined me. In mid-March, I had what seemed to be a stroke. For a couple of days, I couldn’t remember anything.

I spent about 10 days in the hospital for tests, which showed that I hadn’t had a stroke after all, but rather, a reaction to medications. Those meds, combined with the fact that my liver was not functioning properly, created the perfect storm.

I had a couple of rough days after my last round of chemotherapy earlier this month.

If I start the week with chemo, I am fine until about Friday,

On Monday, I received news from my oncologist, Dr. Tan, which has sent me reeling. I have needed the past couple days to process it and get my act together in order to write about it.

For the first time in a year, I have had to resume chemotherapy treatments for my pancreatic cancer. The side effects have been minimal this time, but with each subsequent treatment,

Since I began this blog more than a year ago, life has been running along rather smoothly. That recently changed. Now I am facing more chemotherapy.
